Missouri is placed in both the northern and western hemispheres. Located in the central (or Midwestern region) of the United States of America, part of North America – Missouri is bordered by the states of Kansas, Nebraska, Iowa, Illinois, Kentucky, Tennessee, Arkansas, and Oklahoma
Missouri is a state in the central part of the United States, in the group of states of the Northwest Center (West North Central States). The area is 180.7 thousand km2. Missouri borders Iowa to the north, Illinois, Kentucky, and Tennessee to the east, Arkansas to the south, and Nebraska, Kansas, and Oklahoma to the west.
The state is located at the confluence of the Mississippi and Missouri rivers in the Central Plains. The surface is hilly, in the west it is more even. In ancient times, the Mound Builders lived in Missouri, later the Osage, Sok, Fox, and Missouri tribes. In 1541, the Spanish conquistador Hernando de Soto visited Missouri. In 1673, the expedition of J. Marquette and L. Jolie passed here. Incorporated into the French Territory of Louisiana in 1682. The first European settlement, Sainte Genevieve, was founded in 1735. In 1803, the United States bought Louisiana from France. Since 1821, Missouri has received the official status of a slave state. In 1837, under the Platte Purchase, six northwestern counties were purchased from the Indians. The state became the starting point for the further development of the Frontier. In the 1930s-1940s, the intensive process of urbanization and industrialization led in the 60s to social tension in large cities.
