Airplane: There are no direct flights to Honduras from Germany, Switzerland and Austria. Most flight connections from Germany include a stopover in New York, Chicago or Miami, flights from Switzerland and Austria usually stop in New York, Paris or Amsterdam.
According to Internetsailors, numerous direct flights connect Honduras with all Central American capitals and many destinations in North America, the Caribbean and South America. Most international flights arrive at Tegucigalpa and San Pedro Sula airports, but there are also direct flights between Houston, Miami and Atlanta and Roatan. Once a week there is a charter flight between Milan (Italy) and Roatan.
American Airlines and TACA fly daily to Honduras from Miami.
Airlines that fly to Honduras also include Aerolineas Sosa, Air France, Atlantic Airlines, Continental Airlines, Copa Airlines, Delta Air Lines and SAMI
Airports: Honduras has three international Airports: San Pedro Sula, Tegucigalpa and Roatan. San Pedro Sula Airport is the most used.
Aeropuerto Internacional Ramón Villeda Morales (SAP) is located 15 km east of San Pedro Sula.
Tegucigalpa Airport is Aeropuerto Internacional Tocontín (TGU). It is located 5 km south-east of the city, from here buses and taxis go to the city center. You can also rent a car at the airport.
Roatan’s airport, Aeropuerto Juan Ramón Galvez (RTB) is east of Coxen Hole.
Ship: The most important Caribbean ports in Honduras are Puerto Cortés, La Ceiba, Puerto Castilla and Tela, the most important Pacific port is San Lorenzo. Passenger connections to these ports are practically not offered, only container and cargo ships anchor here. There is only one regular international ferry service operated by Golf Cruz. The ferry runs twice a week between Puerto Cortés, Dangriga and Belize City (Belize).
Rail: There are no passenger trains between Honduras and the neighboring countries.
Car: the Panamericana route leads via Honduras to El Salvador and Nicaragua, the expressway in the west of the country connects Honduras with Guatemala. You should plan waiting times at the borders.
Most car rental agencies do not allow you to leave Honduras in their vehicles. Avis is an exception, but make sure that the car insurance is also valid outside of Honduras.
Most visitors to Honduras enter from Guatemala through the El Florido border crossing. Other popular crossings are Corinto (Guatemala) and El Amatillo, as well as El Poy (El Salvador). Fewer tourists come to Honduras via Nicaragua.
El Salvador
The most important border crossings to El Salvador are El Poy and El Amatillo, there is a third crossing south of Marcala (here, however, there is no entry authority for El Salvador). Entering El Salvador via Marcala is practically illegal and can result in fines. For longer stays in El Salvador, you should use one of the first two crossings.
From Tegucigalpa buses from Tica and King Quality go directly to San Salvador. King Quality also goes to San Salvador from San Pedro Sula.
Guatemala
The main border crossings with Guatemala are in El Florido, Agua Caliente and Corinto.
From Tegucigalpa buses run from Tica and King Quality to Guatemala City (with a stop in San Salvador). From San Pedro Sula, El Rey Express and Hedman Alas drive to Antigua.
Nicaragua
After Nicaragua there are three border crossings in the south of Honduras (Las Manos, La Fraternidad / El Espino and Guasaule) and one crossing at La Moskitia.
All buses to Managua use the Las Manos border crossing. The international connections from Tica and King Quality are also offered here. In La Moskitia there are daily buses from Puerto Lempira to Leimus.
Bus: Regular buses in Honduras do not cross borders with neighboring countries, so you have to get off at the border and board another bus in the neighboring country. However, there are several international bus routes, including Tica Bus, King Quality, Hedman Alas and El Rey Express. They travel with well-equipped long-distance buses on all routes between Honduras and the Central American centers. It is generally recommended to book the bus tickets in advance.
