The climate of the Tatra Mountains
According to Abbreviationfinder, the Tatra Mountains can be roughly divided into the High and the Low Tatras. But designations like Great Tatras, Lesser Tatras, Western Tatras (Zapádní Tatry) and Belianske Tatry are not uncommon. The High Tatras run from Poland to Slovakia. The Slovakian part is the highest, the highest peak is Gerlachovský Štít, at more than 2600 meters. The High Tatras is known for its many mountain lakes (pleso). This area is also very popular with winter sports enthusiasts because it is the only alpine area in Slovakia. There can be up to 2.5 meters of snow here. In the high Tantra live quite a lot of wild animals such as roebuck, ibex, lynx, wild boar, bears and wolves. The High Tatras is the smallest high mountain range in the world.
Contrary to its name, the Low Tatras is also a medium-high mountain range, with peaks that rise above 2000 meters. This is also a very popular ski area, which is partly due to its good accessibility. In several places here there are chairlifts that take you to your slopes. In the summer months, the many forests, caves and valleys offer a great challenge for the avid hiker. The higher elevations have a high mountain climate. Here it freezes almost all year round and the ground is usually frozen solid. There is also quite a lot of precipitation, which consists almost one hundred percent of snow. In the lower areas and in the valleys there is a moderate continental climate. In contrast to the high mountains, there is a big difference between the different seasons and the temperature can easily exceed 25 degrees Celsius. In the summer months, the snow is also exchanged for rain here, but this can also fall in gusts in abundance. The data below is an average for the lower areas.
