The climate of the Azores
According to Abbreviationfinder, as an autonomous state, the archipelago of the Azores has the same rights as Madeira within the Republic of Portugal. The Azores consist of an archipelago of nine, of which São Miguel is the largest. The parliament sits in the largest city Ponta Delgada, while the capital is Angra do Heroísmo. The other islands are Corvo, Flores, Faial, Pico, São Jorge, Graciosa, Terceira and Santa Maria. All these islands are inhabited. The Azores are not very touristy, which makes them an ideal, relaxed holiday destination. Most tourists come here to enjoy the natural beauty and nowadays whale watching is an increasingly popular activity. Due to its location in an atmospheric high-pressure area, the climate here is almost always mild and pleasant, alternating with heavy showers. The weather changes can occur so quickly that they also speak of four seasons in one day. The high humidity in the Azores has the added benefit of making it a glittering green archipelago. The volcano Ponta do Pico on the island of Pico is the highest point in Portugal at 2300 meters.
Hurricanes
During the hurricane season, tropical storms and hurricanes regularly form in the Atlantic Ocean. Normally they migrate westwards to the American continent. Exceptionally, the severe tropical depressions can choose a northern path at an early stage, whereby a course can be set towards the Azores. In 2012, Hurricane Nadine headed toward the Azores, but by the time the hurricane got close, it had already weakened to a tropical storm. In January 2016, it looked like Hurricane Alex would hit the Azores, but Hurricane Alex decided at the last minute to change course. On October 2, 2019, the Azores were hit by Hurricane Lorenzo. The archipelago was lucky, because just before the hurricane reached the islands, it had weakened from the highest category (5) to a first category hurricane. The damage was therefore limited.
