History of Aberdeen, Mississippi
Aberdeen, Mississippi is a small town located in Monroe County, in the eastern part of the state. Founded in 1836, Aberdeen has a long and fascinating history that has been shaped by its unique location, its people, and its culture.
The first settlers of Aberdeen were from Scotland and England, who had come to the area looking for a new life. They found land near the Tombigbee River and decided to settle there. The town was named after Aberdeen, Scotland because many of the settlers had come from that area. The original settlement was around what is now known as Old Towne Square. Soon after settling in Aberdeen, these settlers began to build churches and homes as well as businesses like sawmills and gristmills.
Aberdeen quickly grew into an important river port town due to its location on the Tombigbee River. This allowed goods to be shipped upriver from Mobile Bay to the rest of the state and beyond. In 1846, Aberdeen was officially incorporated as a town with a mayor-council form of government.
During the Civil War, Aberdeen served as an important outpost for Confederate forces due to its location at a key junction between two major rivers –the Tombigbee and Tennessee Rivers . The Battle of Moore’s Mill took place near Aberdeen on July 12th 1862 when Union forces attempted to capture supplies from Confederate forces stationed there – although they were ultimately unsuccessful in their mission.
In 1871, railroads began running through Aberdeen which helped increase its importance as an economic hub for Monroe County . This also led to an increase in population as many new people came into town looking for employment opportunities associated with railroads. As more people settled in Aberdeen, businesses began popping up all over town including stores, hotels, banks, saloons, livery stables, blacksmith shops, churches, schools, newspapers, factories etc.
By the 1900s Aberdeen had become known as “the Hub City” due to its central location within Monroe County. During this time period it also became home to some of Mississippi’s most prominent citizens including Ulysses S Grant Jr., James K Polk Jr., Senator Pat Harrison and Congressman John Sharp Williams among others.
Today, despite being much smaller than it once was during its heyday at turn of century (1900) –Aberdeen still remains an important part of Monroe county’s identity both culturally and economically. It is also home to some historical sites such as Old Towne Square (the original settlement) which is now listed on National Register Historic Places; Moore’s Mill Battlefield which serves as reminder of Civil War; plus several other landmarks that reflect rich history this small town has experienced over years.
